Got a ticket in Auckland? Here's how to fight it
The short answer: council-issued tickets in Auckland — parking, bus lane, transit lane — are disputed in writing with Auckland Transport (AT) via AT — dispute your infringement. Officer-issued speeding and phone tickets are NZ Police notices and go to the Police Infringement Bureau; camera tickets (speed and red-light) are issued by NZTA (Waka Kotahi) since 2025 and disputed through NZTA's own form. Lodge your dispute before the due date on the notice — and never pay a ticket you intend to dispute, because payment is treated as accepting liability.

- Auckland is the bus-lane capital of New Zealand: AT's camera cars and fixed cameras patrol corridors like Fanshawe Street, Dominion Road and Onewa Road's T3 transit lane, and the bus-lane fine is $150. The single most effective defence is the 50-metre rule — you may legally drive in a bus lane for up to 50 m before turning into or out of a side road, driveway or parking space. How do I dispute an Auckland bus lane fine?
Lodge a written dispute with Auckland Transport before the due date, via their online dispute form. The strongest grounds: you travelled less than 50 m to turn in or out (legal), the lane markings or signs were inadequate where you joined, you were outside the lane's posted operating hours, or your vehicle class is exempt (motorcycles, mopeds and cycles are allowed in most bus lanes). Ask AT to produce the full camera sequence showing your measured distance in the lane.
What's the fine for driving in a bus or T3 lane in Auckland?
$150. No demerit points — it's an owner-liability offence, so the registered owner gets the notice regardless of who was driving.
